Athletics fosters culture of service

At St. John’s, serving the community is an essential part of every student’s education. In addition to the school’s Christian service requirements, each athletic team has the responsibility of serving their community, which can take place at any time of the year. Listed below are some of our teams and their volunteer activities.

Football/Field Hockey

Every year, the football team and field hockey team join each other in Christmas caroling at Men’s Homeless Shelter and a Women’s Homeless Shelter. Keilan Robinson ’19 enjoys this activity because he gets to “show off his vocal skills.”

Baseball

Last year the baseball team hosted a “Vs Cancer” Game. The money that they made at that game went to a charity helping beat cancer. Coach Mark Gibbs plans on having this game again this year. Roberto Tan ’19 said, “The baseball team enjoys this service activity because it can help one of our teammates, John Varney ‘19.”

Softball

Every year, the softball team fills and wraps shoe boxes with toiletries for women’s homeless shelters. This year, the softball team volunteered at the DC Rock n’ Roll Marathon. Raye Thomas ’19 said, “These are great ways for our team to bond while helping others.”

Swimming

The swim team recently made trail mix for Martha’s Table. Joe Mumola ‘20 said it was a great opportunity to have fun with the team and serve the community.

Wrestling

Every year the SJC wrestling team teaches kids from the San Miguel School to wrestle.
