Best of the Decade: TV Shows
As the 2010s draw to an end, The Sabrereflects on the biggest moments in TV history. The 2010s was full of quality and not-so quality television. Here’s a list of the best shows from this decade:
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones ran on HBO for eight seasons from 2011 until May 19th of this year. The show, based on George R.R. Martin’s book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” became widely popular. I have not personally watched it, but everyone I talked to about this article said I had to include it. Everyone was anticipating the series finale, however, many thought that it came up short. Nevertheless, Game of Thrones has won the most Emmy awards for any series, with 38 wins and deserves to be on a list of 2010s tv shows.
Parks and Recreation
In think that Parks and Recreation is the funniest show from the 2010s. As the name suggests, it focuses on employees in the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee, Indiana, specifically the very optimistic Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler. The show ran from 2009-2015 and kept us laughing the whole time. I still go back and watch episodes and they all hold up well!
Stranger Things
Stranger Things, which premiered on Netflix, became a pop culture phenomenon. All kinds of merch and clothing have been made surrounding the sci-fi show. It’s about a group of kids who investigate supernatural occurrences in their town. Starting in 2016, it has been running for three seasons. Because of its success, both in pop culture and awards, Stranger Things is one of the best shows of the 2010s.
The Office
You may be thinking that The Office was mainly a 2000s show. Yes, The Office did begin in 2005, however it continued until 2013. The last few seasons did include some important plot points such as Michael Scott leaving and Andy Bernard becoming manager. We can’t forget Michael finally presenting his movie “Threat Level Midnight.” By season eight, however, the show started to feel like it was losing energy and only went on for one more season. Still, The Office remains a classic and if you haven’t seen it yet, Christmas break is a great time to binge watch before the 2010s are over!
Veep
Veep, which aired on HBO, was one of the funniest shows of the 2010s. Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, it follows the struggles of Vice President Selina Meyer and her many failed attempts at running for President. The show contains lots of political satire and blunt humor. It played for seven seasons from 2012-2019 and during its run, the show won seventeen Emmys. If you haven’t seen it yet and need a good laugh between studying for finals, I highly recommend watching some episodes of Veep.
