Black Sororities: Pillars of Community Strength and Unity

The history of Black Sororities runs deep within the African American community, aiding in the preservation of culture and the development of Black youth and adults. Sororities such as Alpha Kappa Alpha (1908), Delta Sigma Theta (1913), Zeta Phi Beta (1920), and Sigma Gamma Rho (1922) are part of the “Divine 9” or the nine historically Black Greek organizations, collectively known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These organizations have played crucial roles in promoting civil rights, addressing race, and advocating for gender equality. Additionally, groups like Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta have provided platforms for African American women to connect and network, especially in non-white spaces. Rooted in solidarity, Black sororities aim to foster tight-knit communities for women.

In the St. John’s community, educators like Ms. Karissa Jackson are involved in sororities, specifically Delta Sigma Theta. Jackson expressed her admiration for the organization, citing its principles of scholarship, public service, and sisterhood (NPHC SERVE). She mentioned growing up around other sorority members and feeling compelled to be part of something significant. Aligning with the organization’s values, Jackson sees service as her calling, considering it her ministry to others, a primary motivation for her teaching career. When asked about the distinctions of Black sororities, Jackson highlighted the unique community culture and their founding missions, particularly in advancing gender and racial equality.

Reflecting on her sorority experience, Jackson reminisced about her line, consisting of thirteen women, named Attraction. She described it as a special bond that garnered attention on their college campus and made a difference in the community. Beyond memorable parties, Jackson emphasized the solidarity and the meaningful impact of community service, achieved through partnerships with other Greek organizations. Overall, she credited her affiliation with Delta Sigma Theta for enriching her college years and contributing to her personal and professional growth.
