Boys basketball plays unofficial season as DC Cadets

The COVID-19 pandemic has prevented all high school sports from having a normal season and SJC’s boys basketball team is no exception. However, the players and coaches have gotten creative in finding ways to get on the court. Boys basketball competed in the St. James Winter League under the name DC Cadets.

Mandates against high school sports by DC mayor Muriel Bowser made it impossible for the team to be able to play or practice within city limits. As a result, the players went to Virginia to unofficially play in the St. James League.

Shane Lancaster ‘22 said, “I feel like we performed well even though we have a young team. I think that next year we can win the WCAC championship as long as we stay focused.”

Without any seniors this year, underclassmen were able to step up and be leaders on the team. SJC’s basketball has some promising talent for the future when they may be able to have a more traditional season.

Freshman Donovan Freeman said, “I just want to get to play honestly. With the pandemic, it’s no telling what will happen next.”

The DC Cadets finished their season with 10 wins and 4 losses. They were able to come together and be a successful force on the court, despite the challenges that they faced this year. However, the team lost to Sidwell Friends School 55-38 in the championship on March 18. 

Head Coach Behan said, “We have an incredible group of hard working student athletes that severely missed competing as much we would love to, but they are all eager for when the time comes. Our guys did a great job of staying patient through the difficult circumstances and handled the adversity of not having a traditional season as well as one could have.”
