Club Spotlight: American Sign Language
Among all the clubs at St. John’s, American Sign Language stood out. Starting the club did not just happen, it had true inspiration. All of the leaders of club, Peyton Bishop ‘25, Nia Dunham ‘25, and London Wright-Porch ‘25 had their own unique reason behind their inspiration.
“Giving back to St. John’s and expanding it a little,” said Dunham. Dunham also had grandparents that taught her sign language because one of them was hearing impaired. There is a gap between people who are hearing impaired and those that are not, but this would allow us to be a representative in the community, Wright-Porch referred too.
This year the ASL club will be having monthly meeting that covers a different topic each time and being able to have moderate conversation through sign by the end of the year. All of the leaders of the club want to have a lasting impact on the community and hopefully one day integrate sign language into the St. John’s curriculum one day.
