Concert Review: Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish is a sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter who performs all around the world, recently stopping in DC at the 9:30 Club. She writes her own songs that reflect on her life as a teen living in a harsh world. Her music reflects the struggles of teenage heartbreak and growing up in the music industry. Eilish writes songs that fall into the Pop/R&B category. Part of the reason why she has found so much success is because her audience, teens and young adults, can relate to her and feel her music as a form of expression.
Eilish is known breaking limits with her music, lyrics, fashion, and merchandise. Her signature style is edgy to say the least. Eilish is almost never found in a dress or short skirt, she often dresses in comfortable basketball shorts and sports jerseys. On November 7th, she brought her edgy style and a great performance to D.C.
Billie Eilish opened with one of her hit songs “My Boy” from her album Don’t Smile at Me. The stage was decorated with a giant spider fixture with disco balls as the eyes and light-up legs sprawling over the set. She was accompanied by her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, who is also known for his appearance as Alistair on the hit TV show Glee.
Eilish was incredibly engaging with the crowd and showed superb stage presence. She was charismatic and constantly dancing while jumping around the stage. The crowd went crazy every time she directed them to sing or jump.
At one point in the show, Billie Eilish stopped the show and directed everyone to put down their phones. She said, “We’ll only be in this moment right now. This is our moment. Put your phones down and just be in this moment. Just be with me here guys lets just be together.” In an instant, the entire crowd put away their phones and she sang her new song When the Party’s Over– a song about heartbreak and toxic relationships between two lovers. The crowd was in awe, shocked by the incredible volume of emotion Eilish displayed with her voice and her facial expressions.
Billie Eilish gave an excellent concert and is definitely worth the ticket fee and wait. The 930 club provided a great venue for her chill, yet exciting set. I would definitely recommend seeing Eilish in concert, or listening to her newest album Don’t Smile at Me on Spotify and Apple Music.
