Daniel Reyes is kicking to fight cancer
This football season, Daniel Reyes ’21 is not only hoping to win a championship, but also to make at least 40 field goals. Daniel has partnered with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise money and awareness to support children with cancer and research to find a cure. People can pledge a fixed amount per field goal or make a one-time donation.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was created after a four-year-old girl named Alex Scott, who was fighting cancer, started a lemonade stand to raise money for researchers in the hopes that they would find a cure. While she lost her battle at the age of eight, her stand inspired more than $1 million in donations through other people starting similar lemonade stands. Her parents started the foundation in 2005 to continue her legacy of raising money for research and supporting other families of children with cancer.
Daniel’s inspiration is his friend Christian, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer in his knee. Christian is a multi-sport athlete, who plays both football and basketball, and runs track. However, he may have to lose his leg to cancer. Daniel said, “I wanted to dedicate my season to him to let him know how much he means to me and his friends and family. Also in hopes that his leg might be saved. I hope it lets people in the St. John’s community know that cancer comes unexpectedly, but also that there is hope and means of beating it.”

His original goal was $1,000, and he has already surpassed it!
