DC Emancipation Day

DC Emancipation Day is annually celebrated on April 16th, commemorating the 1862 signing of the DC Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln, which freed 3,100+ enslaved people in the city. It is an official public holiday, and the mayor’s office and DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment put on a festival, parade, and concert.
