Get Out is a box office hit at SJC

The SJC film club met on Friday November 22nd in Innovation Hall. This time the film club chose to screen the 2017 instant classic horror film Get Out. The screening was a major success with every seat in Innovation Hall filled.

The film club is one of SJC’s many extracurricular clubs. They meet throughout the school year and show popular films of different genres chosen by Ms. Brillante, the moderator of the club.

Before the film was shown, Ms. Brillante shared a presentation on what makes Get Out a modern classic in the horror genre. The presentation included sharing the elements of horror film making that were used in Get Out. Along with comparing the horror film to the 1960s classic comedy Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner starring Sidney Poitier, Kathrine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy. The 1967 film revolves around an interracial couple visiting the girlfriends white parents.

This is the exact plot of the 2017 film Get Out starring Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Catherine Keener. But with a twist of course. The twist being the seemingly nice white parents are crazy with a penchant to abduct Black people and perform brain surgery on them against their will, in order to achieve immortality.

Get Out was a box office and critical success at the time of its release. The director of the film Jordan Peele won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, becoming the first Black screenwriter to win the award. The film also made $255 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget. Talking this into account, it is no surprise the film found success here at SJC.

When asked why the film was chosen, Ms. Brillante said the decision came to be because of the focus in her Honors English 12 class. Her students in the class are currently reading Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X Kendi, a book that details the history of racist ideas in America, and speaks out for an antiracist future. Additionally, Ms. Brillante thought this film was a must see for everyone even those not in her class.
