Getting to know the Softball and Rugby programs at SJC
Spring sports are starting to pick up, and with winter sport coming to an end certain teams are holding tryouts. We talked to the head coaches of two sports that are easy to join, Rugby and Softball. Each coach has responded to several questions about their team and how they operate. Underneath these questions is the contact information for every coach to every spring team.
Softball
How can you join the team?
Tryouts are in late February and interested parties can email the coach about the specific date.
Why should you join the team?
The school’s softball program is growing and in need of new players, especially freshman.
What gear do you get?
The seniors choose what the kits contain, shoes vary from cleats to sneakers. The rest of the kit contains sweatpants, sweatshirts, shorts, and shirts.
Does the team travel?
Yes, to South Carolina over spring break. We play in a tournament down there
How are the coaches?
The coaches are known to be chill and develop players.
How’s the schedule?
Practices are every day, with games eventually starting during the week
Rugby
How can you join the team?
An interested student simply needs to connect with the team and start attending practices. We are in our pre-season mood right now – interested players should email me at CoachTLyons@gmail.com for practice schedule information or ask a current player.
Why should you join the team?
New players are welcome to join now and we usually practice every day.
What skill do you need?
Rugby is a game for lots of different types of athletes and multiple skills. It is a flowing sport, like soccer, hockey, lacrosse and basketball but it is also a contact sport. All players can expect to handle, pass and run the ball as well as defend and tackle. Some positions require specialist skills like kicking or need powerful larger athletes, others more agile, evasive players.
What gear do you get?
Students pay a kit fee for gear that includes lifting shorts, rugby shorts, two t-shirts, a compression shirt, pants, and cleats. Mouthguards are required for contact.
Does the team travel?
Yes, most games are Maryland and Pennsylvania.
How are the coaches?
Yes, the Coaches have good experience. We have multiple alumni and several have played Rugby at Catholic University.
How’s the schedule?
The schedule is pretty good but can be difficult at sometimes. The team practices almost every weekday, lift once or twice a week, Games are once a week in March and February, Weekday games in April and May, and Film meeting once a week.
Remember that Tryouts for Softball are Late February and you can join Rugby until mid to late February. Make sure to join if you’re interested in a Rugby or Softball.
