Lane Kiffin’s Return to Oxford amid Congress considering new law targeting coaching changes
If you follow college football even a little closely you know that this past weekend rivals No. 9 Ole Miss and No.7 LSU played each other in Oxford, Mississippi. This game was no ordinary game because current LSU head coach, Lane Kiffin, coached Ole Miss last season in one their most monumental seasons yet.
Ole Miss has rarely been at the top of the SEC rankings in football, but last season that all changed when head coach, Lane Kiffin, led them to one of their best seasons in program history with a regular season record of 11-1. Ole Miss looked like a true contender for the National Championship going into the playoffs, but unexpectedly Lane Kiffin decided to take the head coaching job at LSU just weeks before Ole Miss was set to make their playoff appearance. The real surprise was Kiffins request to continue coaching Ole Miss through the playoffs after he just signed a seven-year $91 million contract with LSU, a request that Ole Miss athletic director, Keith Carter, denied. The unexpected leave from Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss fans with deep anger and resentment towards him which created a very rowdy and hostile atmosphere at last weekends game.
Recently, federal legislation passed a law regarding mid and late season coaching changes, prohibiting head coaches from moving programs during an active season. Some have dubbed this law the “Lane Kiffin Rule” saying this is a direct response to Lane Kiffin's exit from Ole Miss right before their playoff run.
The game this past weekend played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was seen as a must win game for both teams with Ole Miss wanting to uphold their undefeated record and prove to Lane Kiffin they are better without him and for LSU also wanting to uphold their undefeated record and prove they are a better team than Ole Miss. Ultimately, Ole Miss, led by quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, was able to carry out the win in a score of 32-24. This is seen as massive win for Ole Miss proving to College Football that they do not need Lane Kiffin to have a successful season. Currently, Ole Miss is ranked 4th in the Associated Press and LSU is ranked 10th, giving Ole Miss a serious chance at making this years College Football Playoffs.
