Marvelous Wonderettes opens this week
From April 4-6, St. John’s Theatre is putting on a production of The Marvelous Wonderettes. It features a cast of 14 SJC students and is directed by Mr. Emerson, St. John’s theater director
The musical is about four choir students in the 1950s. It uses pop songs from the 1950s and 1960s to tell the story of a choir group that comes together last minute to perform for their senior prom. The four girls are also all competitors for the prom queen, and it’s a scramble to show off their own acts in order to convince the crowd that one of them should be crowned queen. The first act focuses on their lives in high school, while the second act focuses on their lives 10 years after. During a high school reunion, the girls reunite again and explain their lives after high school through more familiar musical numbers.
The cast ranges from freshmen to seniors, and features Kiley Dollymore, Sophie Ryan, Kate McLoughlin, and Allie Rappel as the four lead girls. Dollymore plays Betty Jean, a practical joker who has trouble with her boyfriend and eventual husband. Ryan plays Cindy Lou, the flirt. She wants to win prom queen most of all, and tends to be a little self-centered. Missy, played by McLoughlin, is the bossiest, but also can be a little shy around her secret crush throughout the play. Finally, Rappel plays Suzie, a happy, slightly ditzy but charming girl.
Rappel said, “I’m excited for the play…there’s also the Glee Club members, like Teresa Knestout, Molly McLouglin, Blaise Ryan, and Craig Robinson.” Rappel said she’s excited to perform on stage with my friends. She also talked about her confidence in the play. “It looks like it’s going to be pretty good… we still have some things to work on, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out,” Rappel said.
Among those excited to see the play is Quincy Waters. She said, “It seems cool…I’m definitely going to go see it. I have a friend in it and she says it’s going good, so I’m pretty excited.”
St. John’s Theatre encourages you to come out and support the play and all the actors. The cast is full of St. John’s students excited to show what they’ve been working on all winter and spring break.
