Meet the New College Counselors
This fall, St. John’s has two new counselors joining the College Counseling Office: Mr. Bradley Harlan and Mr. Warren Quirett. Both have a great amount of experience when it comes to college admissions and working with young adults. The Sabre caught up with them to ask a few questions.
Mr. Quirett
Where did you go to school?
I went to the best school in all the land, Louisiana State University, from 2004 to 2008. I majored in political science, which is my ultimate passion. My senior year was right on the cusp of Obama’s campaign. It was a great experience!
How long have you been working with high school students?
This is year four of working as a college counselor, and in total working in admissions it would be year 11.
What interested you about this field of work?
I got an offer to take a break in college to travel across the country and recruit students for LSU. I found out that my passion could be helping people and did not just have to be law. I moved to Atlanta and decided that I wanted a different experience, and I went into college counseling for three years. I worked at Miami University in Oxford as a regional representative in DC, and after a year I missed the students too much.
What is your favorite TV show?
Game of Thrones! I will drop anything and watch Game of Thrones.
What interests do you have outside of school?
I love to travel and see different cultures. I love to cook. I’m an only child, so when I cook, I cook for like 10 people, but it is just me. In Louisiana culture, you cook for people that just come over to your house. I love live music and experiencing artists in their natural habitat.
What are you most looking forward this year?
Getting to know you guys and embedding myself in the SJC community, particularly getting to know the senior class, because it is always that first class that teaches you so much about the campus community.
Mr. Harlan
Where did you got to school?
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Go Blue!
What got you interested in this field of work?
I joined Teach for America and taught high school science right outside of Durham, NC. The school was severely underserved across the board…I served in a lot of roles within our school community. As a result of doing that work, I got very interested in and passionate about helping students make their post-high school goals a reality. I applied to work at William & Mary and got more entrenched in this field of work. I loved working at a university level, but decided that my real passion was working with students and young adults at the high school level. I’m now ecstatic to have the opportunity to work with the great community here at SJC.
How long have you been working with high school students?
This is my seventh year working in education.
What is your favorite TV show?
I’m currently watching The Office. My favorite show of all time is The Wire – it looks at Baltimore through the lens of politics, education, journalism…it’s a fascinating show.
What interests do you have outside of school?
I have been interested in music and the performing arts since I was in the third or fourth grade. I love to sing and music in general, and I love to run, too.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Really getting to know the students and learning what your goals are. Students are the spirit and backbone of any school community. I can’t wait to work with you all over the coming school year.
