Met Gala theme revealed

The upcoming Met Gala’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibit will feature garments, paintings, photographs, and more, exploring Black men’s style through the lens of dandyism.

Alongside Anna Wintour, the traditional chair of the Met Gala since 1995, co-chairs include Coleman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams. Basketball player LeBron James will serve as the honorary chair.

While the theme has just been announced, a more specific dress code will be released in early 2025.

This theme carries significant cultural meaning, rooted in Monica L. Miller's work. Her book examines how enslaved people reworked their uniforms and explores how Black men have redefined “dandyism” over time. A "dandy" is someone who is devoted to personal style as a form of expression. In 18th-century Europe, dandyism allowed Black men to use fashion to transform their identities and symbolize social and political aspirations. The goal of this Met Gala is to tell the Black dandy's story through diverse media, including fashion, visual art, and even short films.

All of the Met Gala’s co-chairs are Black men who, as Anna Wintour notes, “take advantage of classic forms, but they also remix and transform them in innovative ways.”

The guest list is traditionally unconfirmed until the night of the Gala, but regular attendees like Zendaya and the Kardashians are expected. As for Beyoncé and other celebrities who have sometimes been no-shows, viewers will have to wait and see.

As of now, the Met Gala is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
