St. John’s began construction on the new Center for Performance and Leadership last year. This extension of the gymnasiums and athletic complex is part of a master plan for improvement that began in 2010 with Cassidy Commons and the Fitzpatrick Library. The building is mostly finished, lacking furniture and some finishing touches. It is slated to open for students in October, but The Sabre got a look inside before the crowds.

Inside the main atrium of the building are the traditional scarlet and grey colors of St. John’s. The entrance to Gallagher Gymnasium has been expanded to accommodate the large crowds at sports games.
The entrance to Gallagher Gym will display an interactive Athletics Hall of Fame in the future to honor the achievements of past cadets.
The new concessions booth outside of the gym. Television monitors are located around the lobby so that fans can watch the game even while they go get a snack.
The new basketball locker rooms will have large cubbies for each team member, athletic flooring throughout, and televisions to watch highlights from games.
The new Innovation Hall will serve as a lecture hall, as well as a space for team meetings. It will be used for guest speakers. The graphics wall includes acknowledgements to SJC alumni that have become successful entrepreneurs, including Kevin Plank of Under Armour and Chris Stevens of Keurig.
The Dean of Students office, formerly connected to the cafeteria, will be housed in the new center so that there are administrators on all parts of campus.
A central hallway with locker rooms for athletes. The building is designed to have a locker for each athlete when they are in season.
The field hockey and lacrosse teams have their own designated locker rooms with space for every athlete.
The new “Nutrition Station” will house any supplies, such as post-workout shakes, as well as washers and dryers for gym clothes and equipment. Previously, these things had stored away in closets throughout the building, but now there is a central place for all supplies.
Every locker room contains bathrooms and showers for all students to utilize after workouts. The amount of space in locker rooms has been greatly improved to accommodate high sports participation at St. John’s.
A second performance training room has been added with weight equipment, as well as a sprinter’s turf to conduct speed workouts. This will make it easier for more sports teams to have their performance training workouts at the same time, as well as open up availability for non-team members to conduct their own workouts. There is also an erg room for the crew team in the back so that they will be able to practice inside more easily and have their own designated space. It can also be opened up to use for stretching and cool-downs.
The new sports medicine center now has a spa-like room with tubs for ice baths. St. John’s has been focusing heavily on student athletes’ health through their partnership with Med-Star Health that brings doctors to major sporting events. The improved sports medicine center will allow for even better care and recovery.
The center is designed around multi-functionality. Many rooms such as this one, can be used for multiple purposes. It can be used by teams to have meetings, as well as for alumni groups, or the entrepreneurial center. A projector comes down from the ceiling so that video may be shown to a group.
Each head coach will have a desk to plan for the team and some coaches will have individual offices. Before the remodel, there was limited space for coaches but now they can come do work for the team in a quiet place.
This room has been designed as a rentable suite for alumni to view games in a private and luxurious space. It can also easily be transformed into a meeting room for other members of the St. John’s community.
The new Entrepreneurial Center contains a maker space for students to work on their ideas together, offices, and this graphic that reminds students of the design thinking process learned on the entrepreneurial retreat during sophomore year.
The new space for the Cadet Corps Leadership Program has meeting rooms for students in the program and offices for staff. It has been designed with function in mind and looks out over a great view of the main school building.
The upstairs of the main lobby has panoramic views of campus. Throughout the building there are many water bottle filler stations as part of the green initiative.
