Previewing the 63rd annual Grammy Awards

The highly anticipated 63rd GRAMMY Awards, taking place Sunday, March 14th, will give a chance for all artists to come together and perform the music that got everyone through the tumultuous year. Beyonce, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion are among the many names nominated while Taylor Swift could make history if she pulls off a big win. Live music makes the GRAMMY’s what it is today and performances by BTS, Miranda Lambert, and Harry Styles are a fraction of who is expected to perform at the show hosted by Daily Show host Trevor Noah.

Harry Styles is expected to open the event quickly followed by the first GRAMMYs presented by three of the current nominees, Bill Burr, Chika, and Infante, along with the former Recording Academy Chair, Jimmy Jam. The Recording Academy has not revealed a lot about the night but have given a list of the singers who will perform, generally being artists who are nominated.  Some talented artists performing are; Roddy Rich, Dua Lipa, and Taylor Swift; nominated for six awards; Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, and Dababy; nominated for four; and, Post Malone, and Cardi B: also earning a few nominations. Surprisingly, Beyonce will not be performing despite her having nine nominations, more than any other artist attending.

The GRAMMY Awards have a massive 84 categories, but there are four main categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Album of the Year. Every category has eight artists, songs, or albums nominated depending on the category name. This year for Record of the Year, I expect Doja Cat to win with her hit song “Say So”, but would not be surprised if “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce, or “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa were to grab the award. Song of the Year is extremely close but I believe  “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish will fall short and “Cardigan” by Taylor Swift will take the win. “Cardigan” is universally loved for its high quality songwriting and that will probably give it the boost it needs to grab the award. Best New Artist is a favorite of many viewers and this year I expect Megan Thee Stallion or Dua Lipa to win. 2020 has been a huge year for the two artists and both have had numerous hit songs like “Savage”, “Don’t Start Now”, and “Future Nostalgia”. If both miss the award Doja Cat could win because of her large support on Tik Tok throughout 2020. Album of the Year is the most coveted award on the GRAMMYs and winning is a huge accomplishment for the artist. While I think Dua Lipa could win with her phenomenal album Future Nostalgia, Folklore by Taylor Swift will run away with this one. Folklore captured everyone’s feelings during the pandemic and by winning would give Taylor Swift her third Album of the Year win, the first woman to have such an achievement.

Tune in to the GRAMMY Awards Sunday, March 14th on CBS or any streaming platform that supports CBS such as CBS All Access or YouTube TV at 8 p.m. ET.
