Rakim Jarrett '20 discusses preparation for the NFL Draft
Rakim Jarrett, SJC Class of ‘20, participated at the University of Maryland Pro Day in front of 31 NFL teams and 63 scouts in March. He showed scouts what type of player he will be in the NFL. “I just say my work ethic. Guys know that I am coming in to work, I’m not for a lot of the games and messing around, and I think guys take note of that”, Jarrett said.
Jarrett after the Pro Day gave thoughts on his performance. He believed he did well and proved himself to the scouts because he caught the ball well, ran good routes, and was fast.
Jarrett only played three seasons with Terrapins, but had a lasting impact on his team and the Maryland program. The group of players that are partaking in the pre-draft workouts are the foundation in what has been growing the Maryland football program. Jarrett also has a strong connection to local athletes and the SJC community as a whole since he was in their shoes earlier in his football career . “It meant a lot. Staying home doing what I did to achieving my dream to making it to the NFL. I know everyone at St. John’s is rooting for me and at Maryland, so it means the world to me” Jarrett said.
Head Coach Mike Locksley was named Head Coach of Maryland four years ago. Before the action started at Pro Day he had some thoughts on the program he is creating. “They are all special and I don’t want to take away any of that from players that were here before. To me we are not reinventing the wheel, I know the good, bad, and ugly of Maryland. This here is the culmination of what it looks like when we can keep good players close to home, if we have to go away and get them, then developing them for today and our future success”, Coach Locksley said.
The growth of Maryland football has come a long way and has become more successful over the years, and Jarrett has been a key part of that with over ten career honors.
With the Combine and Pro Day’s over, there is only one thing on the SJC alums mind and that is the NFL Draft and where he is headed next.
