Returning Teacher Profile: Mr. Plott and Ms. Marks

This year, the St. John’s community had the pleasure of welcoming back beloved teachers. Ms. Marks and Mr. Plott have stepped back into the classroom, facing not only a new schedule but a new group of students.
During her time apart from SJC, Ms. Marks was involved in teaching and contracting. When asked why she came back she said it was due to the incredible community of students and faculty that she has found here at St. John’s. Ms. Marks was animated as she described the community and family she returned to at St. John's, stating she found that students are more driven now than when she left school, a win for the underclassmen.
Mr. Plott spent his time away from St. John’s earning his Master's degree in American history in Scotland. He brings this knowledge back to his AP U.S. and AP World History classes here at SJC. Mr. Plott noted the since coming back, the biggest difference he has seen has been the usage of phones among the student body, stating it has drastically declined.
The girls Field Hockey team is popular with both teachers citing it as their favorite to watch. Ms. Marks is most looking forward to the Gonzaga game this fall and Founder’s Day in the spring. While not related to school spirit, Mr. Plott shared with us a passion for spiders as he saved one on the ceiling during his interview. Maybe an SJC Arachnid Appreciation Club in our future?
When asked about the new schedule their opinions were mixed, Ms. Marks appreciates the ease the schedule has brought to the lives of students and teachers, on the other hand Mr. Plott offered concern on the amount of free time students have. Their varying takes on the schedule reflect a broader split among the SJC community regarding the new schedule.
School spirit and spider love aside, both teachers are excited to be back in the classroom at SJC. It is undeniable that the teachers here share a passion, appreciation, and love of teaching.
