Science Department Adds New Courses to Next Year’s Catalog
Ever wanted to try crime scene analysis? What about how ants might help us make antibiotics? Next year, the science department is planning to add a couple new exciting senior courses to its roster: Forensics and Entomology, the study of insects. According to Mrs. Nguyen, the science department chair, “these courses have been introduced to provide seniors with more opportunities to explore different science fields and gain hands-on experiences that could help shape their future college and career choices.”
For those interested pursuing criminal justice, Forensics offers students a chance to learn about crime scene investigation, exploring scientific techniques used to analyze evidence and solve real-world cases. Through projects and assignments involving the technicalities of fingerprinting and DNA analysis, students will have the opportunity to mimic the roles of practicing forensic scientists to learn more about the intersection of law and biotechnology.
Insects have a significant impact on our lives, and the school’s new Entomology course offers insight on these small but important creatures. The course’s activities include “hands-on experiences and fieldwork” to learn about insects’ roles in “ecosystems, agriculture, and even forensic science.” As scientists uncover new truths about insects, students will explore how their anatomy and behaviors affect the world.
As Mrs. Nguyen states, these brand new courses offer much for prospective students to look forward to, through engaging labs and investigations that apply scientific knowledge to the real world. “Whether students are considering careers in criminal justice, biology, environmental science, or medicine,” she says, “these courses will provide valuable insight into potential fields of study. We look forward to seeing students take advantage of these new opportunities and expand their passion for science!”
