SJC celebrates life of John Varney '19 with memorial walk
On April 17th, members of Cadets for a Cure, a club dedicated to cancer awareness and support, marched for St. John’s College High School graduate John Varney of the class of 2019. Varney passed away on March 6th of last year due to a rare cancer in his bones known as metastatic osteosarcoma, but his memory lives on in the SJC Community.
Through this march, the club and other outside participants walked a 5k to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, John’s place of treatment. Online donations surpassed their goal raising a total of $1,908 to donate to the cause.
As one of the club presidents, Grace Goodwin ‘21, helped organize this walk. She did not know him personally but she felt the impact he had on the SJC community and wanted to show [her] support for his family.
About twenty students attended the gathering downtown, along with five alumni as well as John’s Father, Kevin, his cousin, and even his dogs [Tommy and Archie] came! The support for the event included other participants who walked at home and shared their experiences on social media.
Even in a pandemic, the community came together to celebrate an amazing person who holds a special place in the hearts of anyone who had the pleasure of meeting John.
