SJC students work for a cure with Lymphoma and Leukemia Society

The St. John’s Lymphoma and Leukemia Society

The St. John’s Lymphoma and Leukemia Society is a club and fundraising team led by co-chairmans Katie Monahan ‘22 and Therese Osborn ‘22. The LLS was created to provide funding to research a cure for lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma as well as to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. From January 23 to March 13 the LLS will be holding a fundraiser to aid in the research of leukemia. Throughout that period the LLS will be active on social media, spreading awareness of blood cancer and urging students to donate and support the cause.

The Lymphoma and Leukemia Society is responsible for the Student of the Year program at St. John’s. The SOY program is a philanthropic leadership program for high school students. Until quarantine began, other events the LLS would take part in were fundraiser nights at Chipotle and Playa Bowls in Kensington where a portion of the funds spent at participating franchises would benefit cancer research.

Monahan said she was inspired to join so as to honor her grandmother who passed due to cancer as well as to honor her co-chairman’s uncle, who is currently in remission from his long 12 year battle with lymphoma. The LLS has been able to help him with the cost of his chemotherapy, for which he and Osborn, are very grateful. “I hope SJC can stay involved with the LLS students of the year program after I graduate,” Monahan said, “We are currently a two year legacy team, following in the path of Eleanor Bender and a few others senior’s team!”
