How SJC scheduled a team from Hawaii

St. John's Cadets faced off against a team 5000 miles away when they defeated Kapolei High School from Hawaii.

Kapolei, on the island of Oahu, were 3-2 coming into the game against the Cadets.

St. John's coach Mike Ward said, "Kapolei had reached out to many schools outside of Hawaii and when we heard the opportunity to play against them we took it."

He said how Kapolei was getting tired of playing against the same teams every year. "They live on an island, it would be like playing against Gonzaga, and Friendship all the time," Ward said.

They came to D.C. and went to museums, a Nats game, and the monuments. Coach Ward said that this was a good sell for their administration coming to the nation’s capital.

The last football game they had played they lost by one score to the best team in Hawaii, so St. John’s knew they were in for a challenge. Our football team took care of business and ended up winning 23-6.

Coach Ward emphasized how Kapolei were polite guests and were, “very humble, thoughtful, great guests. The locker room was spotless.”

They also gifted Hawaiian candies to the team. Coach Pat Ward said that they were connected through a mutual coach who knows both him and their head coach. This was the farthest East any team had ever come for a high school football game. St. John’s are 3-1 and will be looking to build off the momentum of their 28-26 win against Friendship Collegiate Academy.
