Swim and dive ends rebuilding season with a solid WCACs performance
On Jan. 25, St. John’s swim and dive team competed in the third-annual Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) meet. The girls’ team finished in fifth place out of a total of nine teams. The boys’ team finished in eighth place out of a total of nine teams. The St. John’s diver finished in sixth place for girls.
While a fifth-place team finish for the girls wasn’t ideal, it was still a successful meet for many individual swimmers. After losing last year’s strong senior class, the team struggled to match the high finishes at previous championship meets. But, they continued working hard and finished with a successful in season record.
“WCACs was a tough meet, but the team really came together one last time with the seniors. I look forward to what the team’s future holds. The freshmen are very fast and enthusiastic,” said sophomore Katie Monahan.
Considering it was the last meet for many on the team, it added to the excitement and energy of the night. Quite a few swimmers ended the night with best times in their events or by qualifying for the biggest and final meet of the season, Metros. The team was very supportive of each other, and the team captains helped to set the tone of the night. Jane Brock, the senior diver, finished in sixth place and added to the success of the night.
The boys’ team also had an exciting night, with many swimming their fastest times of the season. They are also in a rebuilding year after graduating a fast senior class. But, they didn’t let this stop them and continued to cheer and race the whole night.
“I thought the WCACs was a great experience and provided opportunities for all swimmers to improve,” said senior Ahmad Dove.
“The chance to race teams out of the regular season creates a unique environment and pushes the team to fast swimming. After a long training season, it is a great chance to end the season on a triumphant note,” said Ryan Magnino, a junior captain.
Although they were disappointed to not repeat the finishes of previous years, both teams gave their all and stood together until the end. They worked hard to create a strong team bond and encourage newcomers. Looking to next year, the teams hope to expand in size and push to regain their top three (girls) and top five (boys) finishes.
