Ten Tips For SJC Freshmen
Welcome class of 2025! In order to make your transition into high school as smooth as possible, here is some advice from someone who has been in your shoes.
1. Join Clubs
Joining a club is one of the best ways to meet people who share your interests. Participating in these after school activities will also give you something to occupy your time.
2. Get a Homework Planner
Staying on top of your homework is a really important habit to set early in your freshman year. Getting a homework planner can really help you keep track of all your assignments and can keep you from missing something important.
3. Keep to the Right in the Hallways
Keeping to the right whenever possible should be able to cut down on your transition time and hep you avoid getting stuck in the crowds in the hallways.
4. Try Something New
High school is a great time to try out something new! You can do a new sport, try a new club etc. This is a great way to meet new people and expand your horizons.
5. Find Ways to Relieve Stress
Your first year of high school can be a stressful time with all the changes that you are going through. Allotting time in your day to decompress will make it easier for you to manage everything. Some different activities that can decrease stress levels that you could try out are exercise, reading, or yoga.
6. Get on a Good Sleep Schedule
While it can be tempting to stay up late, set a good habit now of
getting as much sleep as possible. Being well rested will help you to succeed in your classes.
7. Don’t Compare Yourself to Other People
It can be really hard when you see other people achieving things that can seem out of reach for you. You are on your own journey and everyone reaches their goals at different times. Don’t get too caught up in what everyone else is doing.
8. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Help
If you find yourself falling behind, do not wait to ask for help! Teachers are there to help you and there are a ton of other resources such as the writing center and the academic support center that can help you out.
9. Be Authentic
It can be tempting in high school to try and reinvent yourself to be what you think others want you to be. It’s been said a million times but being yourself will give you a much better freshman year. You will feel more relaxed and you will meet people that will like you for you.
10. Let Yourself Have Fun
While starting out at a brand new school can feel overwhelming, freshmen year is a great time to
make connections and really enjoy your SJC experience! Try not to worry so much because you got this!
