The Comeback Kid: Justin Riemer '20 on his journey from SJC to the Red Sox organization
Justin Riemer ’20 was selected by the Boston Red Sox in Round 4 with the 133rd pick in the 2023 MLB draft. A native of Arlington, Virginia, Riemer played baseball under Coach Mark Gibbs, Class of ’96, winning two WCAC championships with the varsity squad. After graduating from SJC, he played for Wright State University, achieving great success.
Though drafted by the Red Sox in 2023, Riemer’s journey was far from easy. From his freshman years at SJC to draft day, his remarkable growth was evident. “As a player, I’ve grown in every way, with my mental strength being crucial to my success,” Riemer said, acknowledging the support of his coaches and teammates.
Gibbs praised Riemer’s dedication stating h was always an outstanding baseball player in every sense.
Riemer credited his late grandfather for his inspiration saying his strength, intelligence, and selflessness push me every day.
Despite a season-ending knee injury and surgery in the 2022-2023 season, Riemer’s mindset remained unwavering. Determined to return stronger, he approached his rehab with determination. His injury didn’t deter his ultimate goal of reaching the MLB, and he returns to the field having learned valuable lessons.
Riemer’s hard work prior to his injury positioned him well for the draft. As Spring Training begins and the 2024 season approaches, Riemer looks ahead with optimism. “Baseball brings me immense joy, and I’m grateful for the lessons and memories it’s given me,” he said.
