Malu Tshitenge-Mutombo Chooses North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Malu Tshitenge-Mutombo ended the very long and stressful recruiting process by committing to North Carolina over Notre Dame on Sept. 13.
“North Carolina felt like home. The way the campus was and how welcoming the players and staff were was amazing,” Mutombo said. “The way the coaches welcomed me and treated me was like no other school.”
North Carolina will be getting one of the top recruits in the Class of 2019 in Mutombo, who is the niece of former NBA star and Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo. She excels in running the floor while also snagging rebounds and blocking shots. She is a very quick defender and an excellent shot creator for herself and her teammates. “I feel like what I need to work more on before I get to the next level is my defense,” Mutombo said.
Last year she played a huge role in the championship run of the team, with a 32-2 record and winning a WCAC championship title for the third straight year. “I feel as if there is always room for improvement and this year we are a even better and stronger team. This year we have a very good chance of going undefeated,” Mutombo said.
Mutombo joins two of her teammates in the commitment category. Carly Rivera ’19, who committed to Columbia University in the spring of last year, and Alex Cowan ’19 who committed to Wagner College in August.
