The 2025 Met Gala Theme

On May 5, the 2025 Met Gala will be hosted at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which highlights the fashionable style of Black men in 18th century Europe.
Dandyism is a term that describes the style of dress of a dandy, a man who is elegant, neat, and fashionable. Dandies were known for their over-the-top and highly stylized appearance and mannerisms. This self expression was a way to resist political and social norms, such as racism, injustice, and offensive stereotype. Although dandyism has its roots in Europe, this style became a global movement that focuses on the formation of Black identities as their lives transitioned from slavery to freedom. This style of artistic dress will be featured in this year’s Met Gala.
All the co-chairs of this event are Black men who have been influential and outstanding in their respective fields, which truly embodies the theme. Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and honorary chair LeBron James are co-hosting this event and planning the showcase.
With the theme and co-chair announced, all there is left to do is wait until May 5th when actresses, musicians, and other celebrities will walk the red carpet and the exhibit doors will be opened.
