Wrestling looks to pin down competition

The St. John’s wrestling team returns this season to vie for its third consecutive WCAC title. The team has been working hard since their last win and plan to compete in another successful season as a result of their dedication to the sport.

The team started the season in strong fashion as hoped, defying the odds to win a heavily contested match. Senior wrestler Tim Costello ‘19 said, “After winning the Armed Forces duals in north Hagerstown, [the team] have forged together strong teamwork and are excited for what the second half of the season holds.”

The wrestling team has truly been able to foster a family environment. Through staying together through the tough times as well as being there for each other outside of wrestling, they are able to create a strong support network for each other.

Costello later told The Sabre that the team has some great momentum moving into WCAC competition later this winter. The team has manifested some new strength and confidence garnered from their performance and desire to win another championship for the school.

St. John’s also hosted the Capitol Duals Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 5. When asked about the tournament this past weekend, Assistant Coach Mr. Danso said, “The guys did great and went 5-0. It’s great to wrestle in front of a familiar crowd with friends, family, and faculty cheering the boys on.”

When asked how to improve at wrestling, Joey Kevorkian ‘19 gave The Sabre some advice from his teammate Seamus Selmi ‘19. “The key to success in wrestling is drinking your milk,” Selmi said.

In just four weeks the wrestling team will again wrestle for their third WCAC championship, and it looks like the boys are ready. In the words of Joey Kevorkian ‘19: “let’s get sweaty this season.”
